SEC AWARDED $5M SNS CONSTRUCTION

UT Battelle subcontracts DOE Project at SNS


KNOXVILLE, TENN   Safety and Ecology Corporation (SEC) was awarded a $5M construction contract from UT Battelle in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on May 22, 2006. UT Battelle, as an agent for the Department of Energy, awarded the contract at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility to construct Beamline Buildings 5 & 7. SEC is performing as the general contractor, structural concrete forming and installation, structural steel erection, project oversight, subcontractor management and coordination, earthwork and utilities installation.

Contracted activities include installation of pile supported foundations, structural concrete placement, structural steel frame erection, siding and roofing installation, complete instrumentation and electrical services installation, and mechanical outfitting. SNS is a new, accelerator-based science facility providing the most intense neutron beams in the world. It is anticipated to provide new material molecular structure information to industry and scientific researchers in a variety of fields like medicine, plastics, meteorology, metals, and numerous others.

The on-site construction will begin in June 2006 and the contracted completion date is estimated for April, 2007.

As of July, 2006 SEC has completed foundation installation, structural concrete and steel placements, roofing and siding materials manufacture and delivery and miscellaneous electrical and mechanical installations.

Remaining activities include installation of roofing and siding, completion of electrical and mechanical installations, and site grading and paving. Relevant safety stats include that SEC has worked almost 20,000 man-hours with one recordable incident

Subcontractors include: BESCO performing electrical; Hicks and Ingle performing mechanical; Crown-Corr for siding manufacture and installation; Tennessee Roofing - roofing installation, Barnhart Crane - pile driving, Firestop Technologies - structural fireproofing, Morristown Automatic Sprinkler - fire suppression system installation, A&M Equipment Sales - overhead crane manufacture and installation.
